November 2021 Activity: Peñasquitos Canyon Nature Walk

Please join our president Alexander S. Kunz for our November 2021 photography activity: we’ll go for a nature walk on the trails in the riparian woodlands at Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve.

As usual, this is not a Sierra Club outing. You may join, leave, participate as you wish on the scheduled date, and at your own risk. Please continue reading for the details.

Late in the year, sycamore trees, willows and cottonwoods may provide us with some fall colors in San Diego County, and plenty of them grow at Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve. But in this particular place, it’s less the big scenery that is attractive, but instead, the intimate details: leaves on the ground, reflections in the creek, pebbles, cobbles, roots or, if you’re willing to haul a long lens, the birds! Plenty of acorn woodpeckers and scrub jays can be seen and heard there.

• Time: 9 AM at the historic PQ Ranch House
• Location: Google Maps Link (end of Canyonside Park Driveway, San Diego)
• No RSVP is necessary – be there and join the fun!

DESCRIPTION: we will take a short loop walk (~2.5 miles) on the trails that more or less run along the creek. The trail is level but narrow in spots, there can be wet or muddy areas. There are two water crossings, one on a boardwalk ~3 feet wide that doesn’t have any railings. Make sure that you’re prepared for this and comfortable walking there.

We’re going in the morning and there’s a lot of shade but nevertheless, it’s going to be a warm day so please bring water and also dress accordingly.
