Journeys in Latin America

A photography presentation by Jim Cline

Join travel and documentary photographer Jim Cline on his recent journeys through the fascinating and beautiful countries of Mexico, Cuba, Guatemala and Peru.  Jim’s presentation features the very best from his recent travels on many trips to these countries, both traveling solo, while leading groups on photo tours, and on assignments for humanitarian organizations.

First, we’ll journey south down the Baja Peninsula, photographing the incredible gray whales getting up close and friendly to our small boat. After cruising the islands in the turquoise Sea of Cortez, we’ll continue the journey on the mainland of Mexico where we’ll explore colonial cities, and experience the mystical Day of the Dead celebrations in Oaxaca, and visit Chiapas, the most beautiful and less-traveled state in Mexico. There we will visit mystical Mayan ruins and indigenous people still clinging to centuries-old traditions.

We’ll cross over to the Caribbean nation of Cuba, where we’ll explore from the city of Havana to the eastern shore of the island.  Along the way we visit historic colonial towns such as Trinidad, Baracoa, and Santiago.  Everywhere we visit, we are befriended by the gregarious local people.  Finally we end up in Cuba’s famous tobacco region of Vinales, where we visit the homes of tobacco farmers and smoke cigars and drink the local rum with them.

Continuing south we’ll explore Guatemala. We’ll visit traditional families and photograph them in exquisite light.  We’ll meet a local saint who drinks rum non-stop. Then we’ll explore magical Tikal, home to ancient Mayan temples amid a jungle teaming with monkeys, toucans, and other wildlife. Finally we’ll travel to South America and venture to Peru where we’ll go to villages situated high in the Andes and photograph the colorful inhabitants who still carry on many of the traditions of their Inca ancestors.  We’ll finish our journey at the spectacular Inca citadel of Machu Picchu, one of the New 7 Wonders of the World.

About Jim

Jim’s wanderlust and search for compelling images has brought him to many less-traveled areas around the world. He takes particular interest in the indigenous peoples and traditional cultures of developing nations, and in documenting these disappearing cultures. He always strives to transcend ordinary travel pictures, and to convey a strong sense of place, and the spirit of the people in his photographs.

As well as winning numerous awards, Jim’s work has been displayed in the San Diego Natural History Museum, and in many galleries, both in the U.S. and abroad. His photographs have been featured in several books, and have also been published in numerous magazines, newspapers, annual reports, tourist brochures, calendars, websites, and CD covers. Jim founded Jim Cline Photo Tours in 2002 – now offering small-group photo tours and workshops to 18 countries around the globe. Jim currently leads trips to the best photographic locations in Latin America.

When not busy running his Photo tours business, Jim works on assignment as a photographer for humanitarian organizations. His images have graced the covers of annual reports for groups such as Freedom From Hunger, and have appeared on websites, brochures, calendars, postcards and other mediums promoting their efforts around the globe.
