We invite all members of the Sierra Club San Diego’s Photo Section to our August 2023 online meeting with SCPS chair Alexander S. Kunz and his presentation Best Practices for Backup, Storage, Organization. Meeting date and time are at the end of this invitation. Please continue reading if you’re interested.
The meeting invitation with the Zoom link will be sent to all 2023 members via email a few days ahead of the meeting. If you’d like to attend the online meeting, please join the SCPS or renew your membership. Here’s an overview of what’s included: Membership Benefits.
Best Practices for Backup, Storage, Organization
Having a solid concept and understanding of our photo storage and organization is vital for our digital photography workflow. A solid backup strategy is paramount to prevent data loss from the inevitable failures of hard- and software.
In this presentation, we will look at differences and their implications between Adobe’s various software offerings for photographers (Bridge & ACR, Lightroom Classic, Lightroom). Attendees will learn about best practices for photo storage, backup, organization, and workflow — not just in Adobe’s ecosystem, even though the primary focus will be on Adobe Lightroom Classic, the most comprehensive software package in its field.
The presentation is for beginners and intermediate users with basic knowledge of Adobe’s software ecosystem for photographers, but will also cover more advanced topics, like synchronization with Adobe’s cloud storage, and how to best integrate it into your workflow if you want to work with your photo collection across multiple devices, or while on the road.

About Alexander

Our members know Alexander as the current chair of the Sierra Club Photo Section, for his expertise in digital photography workflow, and as the instructor for our Lightroom workshops. He works as a photography tutor and Lightroom expert, and when he’s not solving Lightroom and computer riddles, he’s actually a photographer too!
Alexander’s primary photographic interest are landscape and nature, and he is passionate about intimate landscape images from San Diego County’s incredibly diverse environments, as well as close-up and macro photography of native plants.
His website is at www.alex-kunz.com; follow him on Mastodon at @alexskunz@mas.to or see some of his photos on Flickr at @alexskunz.
Goodies for Members
After the presentation we will take a short break and then have a free drawing where members can win coupons from local businesses who kindly support us, a book from Rocky Nook, and more!
MemberShare
After the break and giveaways, we continue with our MemberShare. Each member gets to share up to five photos with the audience.
You could share your photos from our monthly activity, but they don’t have to be recent. SEND YOUR BEST PHOTOGRAPHS. For example, create a small series of five favorite images or a project, and share with others what your photographic interests are about.
Here’s a quick reminder of the guidelines and procedure:
- Send up to five photos via Dropbox file request.
- Check our guide on image sizes, JPEG quality, file naming, metadata
- Prepare to speak no more than 10-20 seconds on each photo
- We expect technically solid photographic work
- Deadline for MemberShare submissions: Friday, August 18, 6 p.m. PST
- Nameplates: feel free to include a vertical orientation headshot with your photos
To submit your images, simply click this button:
If you need help or if there’s anything unclear about this procedure, the Dropbox help article on file requests contains everything you need to know.
NOTE: Your photos are only shown during MemberShare and will be deleted afterwards. We do not keep copies. There is no need to watermark your photos. If you wish to add a logo or other overlay, please keep it small and unobtrusive.
When the MemberShare is especially popular, we may have to reduce the amount of images from each member. If that happens we will announce it before MemberShare begins, and hope for your understanding.
