You are invited to the February 2020 meeting of the Sierra Club San Diego Chapter Photo Section at the Serra Mesa/Kearny Mesa Library Community Room. Our presenter this month is pro landscape & travel photographer Dan Ballard from Colorado, with his presentation “Unlocking Your Creative Potential”. Please continue reading if you’re interested, and find the complete details with date and time at the bottom of this article.
Please note that due to a scheduling conflict at our location, this meeting is on SUNDAY.
Unlocking Your Creative Potential
What does it take to create a truly powerful image? And how do we go from raw file to masterpiece? In this presentation, Dan will share his method for creating movement, energy and drama in a photograph – digging into how certain combinations of elements can influence the eye and mind in a profound way. The session will focus 100% on the artistic side of shooting and editing, with examples and demonstrations that breakdown the art of visual storytelling into a recognizable pattern that can be used as a tool to create great images. All levels of photographers welcome.
About Dan
Dan Ballard is a pro landscape photographer, avid traveler and educator from Colorado. His work reflects over a decade of traveling the globe, spending countless days chasing weather and waiting for light. Each image he creates represents a heartfelt attempt to capture the beauty, drama and emotion of the world and its people.
Dan challenges photographers of all levels to think differently about composing and processing their images, bringing focus to the value of creating original images in a world where that is getting harder and harder to do.
With over a decade of experience shooting landscapes, people and western photography, Dan has been recognized by some of the biggest names in the photo industry and has sold images to clients around the globe – including The National Geographic Society and The Travel Channel.

Members-Only Free Drawing
After the main presentation, we will have a brief intermission and our members only free drawing – every Photo Section member present at the meeting will receive a free ticket for the drawing, with a chance to win prices and giveaways.
MemberShare
MemberShare will occur after the intermission & drawing. Here’s a quick reminder of the guidelines and procedure:
- Send up to five photos via Dropbox file request.
- Please send only JPEG files, sRGB color space
- Minimum resolution: 1920 pixels wide or 1080 pixels high (whichever comes first)
- No maximum resolution but anything larger than 3000 x 2000 is unnecessary
- Prepare to speak no more than 10-20 seconds on each photo
- We’re a photo club – please share only your original photographs with us (no CGI, digital art, etc.)
- Deadline for MemberShare submissions: Friday, February 7th, 6pm
- Nameplates: feel free to include a portrait format (vertical!) headshot with your photos
To submit your images, simply click this button:
If you need help or if there’s anything unclear about this procedure, the Dropbox help article on file requests contains everything you need to know.
NOTE: Your photos are only shown during MemberShare and will be deleted afterwards. We do not keep copies. There is no need to watermark your photos. If you feel that you must add a logo or other overlay, please keep it small and unobtrusive.
Also, please do not wait until the very last minute to submit the photos you want to share. We need time to prepare the image presentation. When the MemberShare is especially popular, we may have to reduce the amount of images from each member. If that happens we will announce it before MemberShare begins, and hope for your understanding.
NEW: Photo Conversations
After our MemberShare, we will continue with our new photo conversations – members can submit one image, which will be projected anonymously for constructive discussion. Since this is the first time we’re trying this new format of learning together, our president Alexander S. Kunz will talk about the goals of this exercise, and how to approach it. Members will receive more details and a submission link directly via email.
Meeting Location, Date & Time
We have your new 2020 membership badges ready for all those who signed up for a 2020 membership.
