We invite all members of the Sierra Club San Diego’s Photo Section to our November 2022 online meeting with fine art photographer Rain Hayes and her presentation: “Making Magic with Invisible Light: The Art of Infrared Photography.” Meeting date and time are at the end of this invitation. Please continue reading if you’re interested.
Making Magic with Invisible Light: The Art of Infrared Photography
Infrared photography uses invisible light to create surreal, sometimes fantastical images. Characterized by softly glowing foliage, heightened detail and uncanny colors, infrared photographs literally show us the world in a new light.
A once-niche technique, infrared photography has exploded in popularity in recent years. New and better equipment and software have created a wide open field for imaginative photographers to explore. Rain Hayes joins us to discuss her practical and artistic approaches to this fascinating medium.
About Rain

Originally drawn to the ghostly, antique quality of experimental images she made with an R72 filter, Rain has immersed herself fully in the world of infrared photography. Her creative approach makes use of unusual colors to conjure soft, dreamy landscapes that suggest a familiar but slightly unreal version of the world around us. Though she primarily focuses on the beautiful terrain of her home turf in the San Francisco Bay Area, she also works with a range of non-traditional infrared subjects such as architecture, portraiture, botanical and macro.
A lifelong learner and endlessly curious, Rain is led by an unremitting desire to make beautiful (and sometimes useful) things. She is self-taught in a number of fields, including blacksmithing and welding, dressmaking, oil painting and software engineering. The constant urge to question, understand and apply new knowledge is at the heart of her method.
Rain sells her work as fine art prints through her website, rainhayes.com. She can also be found on these social networks:

Goodies for Members
After the presentation we will take a short break and then have a free drawing where members can win coupons from local businesses, a book from Rocky Nook, and more!
MemberShare
After the break and giveaways, we continue with our MemberShare. Each member gets to share up to five photos with the audience.
Photos don’t have to be recent. SEND YOUR BEST PHOTOGRAPHS. For example, create a small series of five favorite images or a project, and share with others what your photographic interests are about.
Here’s a quick reminder of the guidelines and procedure:
- Send up to five photos via Dropbox file request.
- Check our guide on image sizes, JPEG quality, file naming, metadata
- Prepare to speak no more than 10-20 seconds on each photo
- We expect technically solid photographic work
- Deadline for MemberShare submissions: Friday, November 18, 6pm
- Nameplates: feel free to include a vertical orientation headshot with your photos
To submit your images, simply click this button:
If you need help or if there’s anything unclear about this procedure, the Dropbox help article on file requests contains everything you need to know.
NOTE: Your photos are only shown during MemberShare and will be deleted afterwards. We do not keep copies. There is no need to watermark your photos. If you feel that you must add a logo or other overlay, please keep it small and unobtrusive.
When the MemberShare is especially popular, we may have to reduce the amount of images from each member. If that happens we will announce it before MemberShare begins, and hope for your understanding.
