You are invited to the October 13 meeting of Sierra Club Photo Section at the Serra Mesa Kearny Mesa Library Community Room, featuring Susan Coppock and her presentation “Chasing Storms & Photographing Lightning.”
Main Presentation
The idea of photographing lightning is intimidating for many of us. In her presentation, Susan will show what it’s like to chase storms and how to shoot lightning – including equipment and settings, as well as ideas for compositing new photographs with storm imagery. She will show us that photographing storms and lightning may be way easier than we think.
Here are some of Susan’s images:
About Susan

Susan is first and foremost a storm chaser and nature photographer. Most of her work is night photography of the Milky Way, star trails, moon shots (including the 2017 Solar Eclipse), and thunderstorms, including cloud formations and lightning. She tries to share with others the awe and spirit she feels when surrounded by the power of nature, the fury, and the incredible beauty in the storms nature produces, where each image is like no other. Sharing her work with others who may not be as fortunate to witness these natural phenomena makes her especially happy.
She has been photographing for 40+ years and is still thrilled every time she captures something special in nature. She lives, breathes, works, dreams, and teaches photography. She is in her 16th year of teaching photography at San Dieguito High School in Encinitas. Along with her love of teaching kids, she has a passion for night photography and storm chasing. She loves sharing this passion with her students and knows how lucky she is to get to teach what she loves. Her work has won numerous awards, including Best of Show, and has been shown in magazines, museums, galleries, and personal collections.
You can find more about her and her work on her website Susan Coppock Photography and follow her on Instagram.

MemberShare will occur after the intermission. Here’s a quick reminder of the guidelines:

- you do not need to downsample your images (anything larger than 1920 x 1080 pixels is great)
- prepare to speak no more than 10-20 seconds on each photo
- please share your original photographs with us
- Deadline for MemberShare submissions: Friday, October 12th, 6pm
- nameplates: feel free to include a portrait format headshot with your photos!
To submit your images, simply click this button:
NOTE: Your photos are only shown during MemberShare and will be deleted afterwards. We do not keep copies. There is no need to watermark your photos. If you feel that you must add a logo or other overlay, please keep it small and unobtrusive.
Also, please do not wait until the very last minute to submit the photos you want to share. We need time to prepare the image presentation. When the MemberShare is especially popular, we may have to reduce the amount of images from each member. If that happens we will announce it before MemberShare begins, and hope for your understanding.
As always, our club meetings are open to the general public. Please invite your friends to join us for an informative and great evening!
