September 2019 Meeting: photographing & protecting the Grebes at Lake Hodges

You are invited to the September 2019 meeting of the Sierra Club San Diego Chapter Photo Section at the Serra Mesa/Kearny Mesa Library Community Room. Please continue reading if you’re interested, and find the complete details with date and time at the bottom of this article.

This month, we’ll hear from Krisztina Scheeff of KS Nature Photography and David “Ranger Dave” Hekel from the San Dieguito River Park about photographing and protecting the Grebes at Lake Hodges.

About the Presentation

Wildlife & Nature Photographer Krisztina spent years studying and photographing the Grebes on Lake Hodges. Their unique mating behavior called “rushing” is one of the most photographed animal behaviors. Called the “Grebe Whisperer” by many of her clients and fellow professional photographers, Krisztina will take you on a photographic journey into the world of Grebes and give you all the details on why and how these birds “walk on water” to find a mate. Dave will include updates on the conservation efforts to save the Grebe nests at Lake Hodges. Krisztina will round things off with some of her other favorites, like the Atlantic Puffins.

About Krisztina & David

Based out of San Diego, Krisztina operates KS Nature Photography, a successful photography tour business that focuses on wildlife & nature photography workshops around San Diego & Orange County. She also leads nature photography tours around the world, to places like Scotland and Ireland. Her enthusiasm and passion for wildlife photography rubs off on everyone who meets her. She has been published twice as photographer of the month in Wild Planet Photo Magazine and won numerous awards, including one last year from the National Audubon Society. Her prints can be seen in various shows and exhibits.

David has been Senior Park Ranger for the San Dieguito River Park for 18 years, and has worked around Lake Hodges for close to 25. He is a photographer and tour guide, bringing a vast amount of knowledge about both the birds and animals that reside and season around the lake, as well as the many native plants that make up the parks ecosystem. He has taken a particular interest in one of Lake Hodges full time residents: the Western and Clark’s Grebes, and is able to spot and identify their many unique behaviors. He guides clients of KS Nature Photography around and on the Lake to capture that perfect photo of the Grebes rushing.

Intermission and MemberShare – Immediately Following

After the main presentation, we will have a brief intermission and our members only free drawing – every section member present at the meeting will receive a free ticket for the drawing, with a chance to win prices and giveaways from our supporters.

MemberShare will occur after the intermission. Here’s a quick reminder of the guidelines and procedure:

  • Send up to five photos via Dropbox file request.
  • Please send only JPEG files, sRGB color space
  • Minimum resolution: 1920 pixels wide or 1080 pixels high (whichever comes first)
  • Prepare to speak no more than 10-20 seconds on each photo
  • We’re a photo club – please share only your original photographs with us (no CGI, digital art, etc.)
  • Deadline for MemberShare submissions: Friday, September 13th, 6pm
  • Nameplates: feel free to include a portrait format (vertical) headshot with your photos!

To submit your images, simply click this button:

SEND YOUR PHOTOS

If you need help or if there’s anything unclear about this procedure, the Dropbox help article on file requests contains everything you need to know.

NOTE: Your photos are only shown during MemberShare and will be deleted afterwards. We do not keep copies. There is no need to watermark your photos. If you feel that you must add a logo or other overlay, please keep it small and unobtrusive.

Also, please do not wait until the very last minute to submit the photos you want to share. We need time to prepare the image presentation. When the MemberShare is especially popular, we may have to reduce the amount of images from each member. If that happens we will announce it before MemberShare begins, and hope for your understanding.
